311

311 is an American rock band whose members all grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. Three of the band's members, Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton were from the western part of the town while Aaron “P-Nut” Wills and SA Martinez were
from the southern part of the town. The name 311 actually comes from an incident involving the arrest of former member Jim Watson for indecent exposure and had been issued a ticket with code violation “311.”
Among the different styles 311 incorporates into their music include rap, punk, rock, ska, reggae and funk.
311 was formed in 1989 and it began with 4 members: Nick, Chad, P-Nut and Jim Watson. 1991 saw the group part ways with original member Jim and the installation of Tim as the band's lead guitarist. The following year, SA became full-time for the group thus completing the band's roster of members up to the present.
311's first major album, “Music,” was released in 1993 and featured the single, “Do You Right,” which reached number 27 of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. The said album reached a Gold RIAA certification. The following year saw the group release their next major record, “Grassroots,” which like its predecessor also hit Gold. It was during this time when they toured the US non-stop and because of which had them start establishing their fan base.
It was not until their self-titled albums, “311,” when 311 enjoyed a mainstream breakthrough as the said record went on to become triple Platinum. The songs, “Don't Stay Home,” “Down,” and “All Mixed Up” ranked number 29, number 1 for 4 weeks and number 4 respectively in Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Their popularity grew as the album got to reach single Platinum by 1996.
In 1997, 311 released its fourth major album, “Transistor.” The said record banners “Transistor,” “Prisoner,” and “Beautiful Disaster,” which ranked numbers 14, 21 and 21 respectively in Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Then the group's fifth album, “Soundsystem,” was released in 1999. “Come Original” and “Flowing” in the album reached numbers 14, 21 and 21 respectively in Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. “Transistor” has already reached Platinum while “Soundsystem” is currently Gold.
Succeeding albums of 311 include, “From Chaos” (2001,) “Evolver” (2003,) “Greatest Hits '93-'03” (2004) and “Don't Tread on Me” (2005.)
Also in 2000, the group started celebrating “311 day” on March 11. It was held in New Orleans once every two years. “311 day” 2000 had the band singing 47 songs while “311 day” in 2002 had 59 songs. Finally “311 day” in 2004 had the group performing 68 songs. “311 day” in 2006 had the band perform 65 songs in Memphis because of the destruction from Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.
