Nirvana: The Legend

Kurt Cobain When a 19-year-old Kurt Donald Cobain met the originally Yugoslavian yet Los Angeles-born Krist Novoselic in 1986, the legend of Nirvana was an embryo that would very soon grow up into a band-baby after the joining of Dave Grohl, the magical drummer.

Nirvana boys were either born or raised in a spot in Washington State, except for Dave who was born in Warren, Ohio. Yet, the band itself had its very first cry in Aberdeen, Washington, Kurt's natal town. By 1991, Nirvana had a place not only nationally, but its fame penetrated the States borders, thanks to the then hit album Nevermind. The album announced the officially addition of a new alternative rock genre named: grunge. This form of rock is distinct from all the 1980's rock in both form and content. By and large, Grunge music is marked by heavy guitar, strong drumming, slow tempos, and relatively simple, catchy repeated phrases that almost always dealing with very huge matters that even some critics took to be philosophical in concept. Pain, anger, frustration, agony, and black humor were the main themes of grunge music and Nirvana songs.

The Nirvana's pinnacle of success was achieved in August 28, 1992, just ten days after the birth of Frances, Kurt's daughter, when Nirvana performed what is said to be their best concert ever at the Reading Festival, England. In the following month, they played at the MTV Video Music Awards, were awarded Best Video Award for their classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and obtained the Best New Artists Award. In the years to follow, Nirvana's crazily marvelous style jumped into the mainstream and gained more popularity, even after Kurt's suicide and the band's disbanding. In April 8, 1994, an electrician found Kurt's dead body on the floor of Kurt's house in Seattle. A sentence from Kurt's suicidal note reads, "…it's better to burn out than to fade away." Nirvana is still a burning fire that probably will never peter out, inspiring generations and catering for audiences all around the globe.
